Join Us for Our Monthly Art Challenge: One Colour, One Week!
Partager
We’re excited to kick off our monthly art challenge, and we’d love for you to join in! Each month, my dad, Greg, and I will take on a challenge to help us sharpen our skills, and you can play along too!
For this first challenge, we’re going to paint a 5x7 (or no larger than 8x10) canvas using just one colour—specifically red—and explore all the different shades and possibilities within that hue. Sounds simple, right? But here’s the catch: we can only use variations of that one colour. We’ll be exploring what happens when you stretch a colour across its entire spectrum, from its lightest tints to its deepest, richest tones.
We’re not the first to jump into this one-colour painting challenge. In fact, Ten Hundred (a fantastic artist on YouTube) has been doing this kind of challenge, and we’ve been inspired to try it out ourselves! It’s a fun way to push your skills and get more comfortable with working within limitations.
Here’s How It Works:
- Size: Your painting should be no larger than 8x10 inches.
- Colour: We’re starting with red—but you can explore all the different tones, tints, and shades within the red family (so reds, pinks, maroons, and everything in between!).
- Time Frame: You have one week to finish your painting. We’ll post our results after the week is up, and we’d love for you to share your work with us too!
Why One Colour? Working with just one colour may seem simple, but it challenges you to think about values, textures, and composition in a whole new way. It’s also an excellent way to really get to know your paints and practice techniques like layering, blending, and glazing. By restricting your palette, you focus on making the most of the nuances and depth you can create with just one hue.
The Challenge Starts on January 6th, 2025 with our completed paintings being posted on February 3rd, 2025.
This gives you a whole month to get ready with us. We’ll be posting our own red-themed paintings and sharing our process along the way, but you can join in at any time—whether you're an experienced artist or just looking to try something new.
We’re super excited to see how everyone interprets this challenge and to keep improving alongside all of you. Let’s see how much we can do with just one colour!
